April 10th, 1996 - The Inauguration of the Molson Centre

On April 10th, 1996, Celine had the honour of giving the inaugural performance at the Molson Centre Theatre, which was built to replace the Montreal Forum. Celine's current manager, Aldo Giampaolo, was Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the Molson Centre at the time. He is credited with the concept of transforming a sports arena into a venue suitable for an intimate concert atmosphere. The first song that Celine sang that evening was ''J'attendais'', from the album 'D'eux'. She was forced to pause during the performance because of the standing ovation she received from the audience.

That night would be the 1st of 34 performances Celine has given at the Molson Centre, which eventually became the Bell Centre in September 2002.

25th anniversary of ''Unison''

UNISON, Celine's first English-language album, was launched on Monday, April 2nd, 1990, at the Metropolis in Montreal 25 years ago today. 1600 people attended the event, which served as a mini-concert and was televised live, a first for the Montreal music industry. In another first, Celine spoke and responded to journalists in English at the launch.

At the time, Celine had this to say about the album: "CBS and Rene have been working on the album for 3 years. They received between 200 and 300 demos and listened to every single one. You never know what to expect. They chose about 50 songs. Rene knows what I like. After I listened to this selection, we decided to keep 20, recorded 15 and eventually chose 10 for the album.”

Celebrating 20 years of ''D'eux'' : The creation of the album cover and the title

The Album Cover

Monic Richard, photographer: "...this photo was inspired by Celine's short hair and the boyish clothing chosen by her stylist, giving her an androgynous look."

The Title
Celine : "The album was originally going to be entitled "Pour que tu m'aimes encore." The name was good, but it wasn't quite right..."
Valérie Michelin (Head Producer at Sony Music France at the time): "The idea for the title came from a brainstorming session with Virginie Auclair, Creative Director at Columbia."
Celine : "...it was refreshing to have a title that wasn’t one of the songs on the album but represented them nonetheless. The album reflects Jean-Jacques' incredible talent together with what I humbly contributed. He enjoyed writing the songs, and I enjoyed singing them."
(Marie-Christine Blais, La Presse, April 1st 1995.

Celebrating 20 years of D'eux

Today, TeamCeline celebrates the 20th anniversary of 'D'eux', the best-selling French album of all-time with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide.

In February 1994, before developing the friendship they now have, Jean-Jacques Goldman, already a huge star in France, decided to write an entire album for Celine focusing on her love life (''Pour que tu m'aimes encore'', ''Je sais pas'', ''J'attendais'') and her professional life (''Destin''). The album allowed Celine to explore many new musical styles, including blues (''Le ballet''), rock ‘n roll (''J'irai où tu iras''), rhythm ‘n blues (''Regarde-moi''), gospel (''Prière païenne''), pop (''Les derniers seront les premiers'', ''Cherche encore'') and ballads (''La mémoire d'Abraham''). The album ends with the touching song ''Vole'' dedicated to Celine’s niece Karine, who passed away from Cystic Fibrosis two years earlier.

Celine Puts Show Business Career On Hold For Her Health And Family Reasons

Montreal, August 13th - Celine Dion has decided to postpone all of her show business activities indefinitely, in order to focus 100% of her attention on her husband Rene, their family, and associated health issues. Since Rene's surgery last December to remove a cancerous tumor, it's been a very difficult and stressful time for the couple as they deal with the day-to-day challenges of fighting this disease while trying to juggle a very active show business schedule, and raise their three young children.

Celine has also been fighting an illness that has caused inflammation in her throat muscles, and has not been able to perform any of her scheduled shows in Las Vegas since her last show on July 29th. She has still not recovered from this condition.

"I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband's healing, and to do so, it's important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our children. I also want to apologize to all my fans everywhere, for inconveniencing them, and I thank them so much for their love and support." said Celine

During this hiatus, Celine will cancel her shows at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace until further notice. She will also cancel her tour of Asia, previously scheduled for the fall of this year.

Celine and family have requested that their privacy be respected at this time.
