Celine's intimate touch shapes the Caesars Colosseum

LAS VEGAS - When Park Place Entertainment launched its major project to revamp the Caesars Palace hotel, casino and entertainment infrastructures, it approached Scéno Plus for the development of an architectural concept and theater design of what was to become the Caesars Colosseum. Constructed directly on Las Vegas Boulevard, the building is loosely inspired by Roman aesthetics with contemporary overtones. It is one of Las Vegas' largest and most elegant showroom - nothing less to host Celine Dion's return to the stage in a mega production directed by Franco Dragone.

Patrick Bergé, president of Scéno Plus and Project Designer, explained «The design was guided by Celine's desire to be as close as possible to her public and Franco's wish that the show have the vastest visual impact as possible, in order to totally immerse the audience within the action on the stage». To reach this objective, Scéno Plus and Park Place Entertainment opted for a circular building configuration that strikingly calls to mind a Colosseum, with one of the largest stage openings in the world. The furthest spectator is on average only 120 feet away from the center stage, a short distance considering the size of the theater.

General Information
Client: Park Place Entertainment
Capacity: over 4000 seats
Area: 171,235 sq ft
Opening: March 2003

Notable Features

The building, attached to the existing casino, is 120 ft high and 256 ft in diameter. The orchestra level has a capacity of 2,283 seats, the first balcony 745 and the second balcony an additional 1,074 seats. The vast 22,450 sq ft stage has an enormous 120 ft wide by 44 ft high proscenium arch, one of the largest in the world. The sheer size of the stage required the development of a microclimate air conditioning system for better control of ventilation and humidity at the front of the stage, optimal conditions for a singer. An infinite variety of theatrical special effects are made possible by the impressive theater technology:

  • a modular technical grid

  • a completely motorized rigging system

  • 1,200 dimmers controlling 1300 theatrical lighting fixtures, of which 140 are motorized

  • a 5 channel surround sound system with 115 speakers powered by 125 kW of amplification

  • Four 10 000 lumen video projectors

  • 200 acoustical panels (32 sq ft each) to control the room acoustics

  • a top notch control room with a state-of-the-art show control equipment
